Delegates Debating

Hey Everyone! This weekend my school hosted their very own MUN conference! We had over 20 schools send delegates along with about 10 committees. In total there were almost 1,000 kids there! This was a great experience as we got to enjoy all the best aspects of MUN while on our home turf. I was a chair (or leader) of a crisis committees. Crisis is different from the general committees. Normal committees are like UNICEF of UNEP which are representations of real UN groups. Each person represents a country and debates in favor of their countries stance for the real world topics being discussed in committee. However in crisis, each people is a imaginary figure in the future, working to beat the "crisis" presented to them at the beginning of the day. Normally there are three crisis committees working with or against each other and the problem to see who will come out on top. It was very exciting! And the best part was my committee won!
Another great part about hosting the conference is you get to pick a charity to donate profits to. This year, we held a fundraiser at our conference to help Hands for Africa, a charity helping give prosthetics to the hurt in Sierra Leone. We gave out raffle tickets for each dollar donated and raffled of prizes like shirts, hackey sacks, and jewelry hand made by the victims. Overall, it was a great conference and made a lasting impact on the world!

Loads of Awards

Hey everyone! Here in the United States, it is the beginning of spring. And spring means award season! Awards for celebrities that is. Most of the main music, movie, and television award shows occur in the end of winter and beginning of spring. For each award show, there is a big tv broadcast showing the ceremony, filled with a comedic host, live performances, and of course the giving of awards. These awards are given out of the winners in each category, ranging from best movie or song to best lead male actor or new artist. Some of these awards are chosen by a committee, while others are voted for online. Three main awards shows around this time are the Grammys, the Academy Awards, and the Emmys.

The Grammys take place in the beginning of February and specifically award musical celebrities. Awards are given out to best song, best rap artist, best pop album, and the list goes on. This year the big winner was Adele, wining 6 grammys including record, album, and song of the year.
The Academy Awards happen in the end of February and specifically award actors and actresses in movies. Not only do they award actors and actresses, but they award people for all aspects of the movies like scripts, directors, sound, and music in the movies. The awards given out at this event are called Oscars, and are probably the most prestigious and anticipated awards of the whole year.
Finally, the Emmys take place in May. The Emmys celebrate all aspects of television from actors to directors to writers. It's always fun to see which television shows win for best drama and comedy, while seeing the actors and actresses that win as well.

What award shows do you like watching? Let me know in the comments!

Oh the Places You'll Go

Hey everyone! This weekend in the United States was Presidents Day, a holiday celebrating the birthday's of some of two of our great presidents, Washington and Lincoln. Most schools get a Friday and Monday off in February to celebrate this holiday, leading to a four day weekend! This time off of school is a perfect time to accomplish many things, weather it be work, travel, or fun.
This is a time where many people travel to the mountains to go skiing and snowboarding. Although the weather in southern California is beach weather, it is only a short drive to snow. Having four days off school is a great time to hit the slopes. If snow isn't quite your style, you can head to the beach where the temperature is hot and the water is cool. Many surf competitions occur over this weekend, along with other events just for fun.
If you are up for traveling farther, many people use this vacation to tour colleges out of state. As a junior, applying for colleges takes place next year and it is a good idea to view colleges before you apply so you know if you like them or not. Many people from southern California use this time to travel to Texas to visit colleges like TCU and SMU or travel to the east coast to visit colleges like Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.
If staying local is what you want to do during the break, you can visit amusement parks near your home, go to a movie, or an arcade. Disneyland is only 20 minutes from my house, so I love to go there during holidays. I also take this time to see the new movies in theaters and partake in other fun events going on in the community. There is always something fun to do during your days off from school!

What do you like to do during your vacations? Let me know in the comments!

The Big 14th

Hey everyone! February 14th is a special day each year... It's Valentine's Day! Valentines' Day is the "love" holiday that occurs each year. Its the perfect time to celebrate your love for your friends and family with gifts like chocolates and flowers. Sometimes even jewelry! Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine's Day in the U.S. and 189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine's Day. For more information about Valentine's Day, check out this cool article!

My school always enjoys celebrating Valentine's Day. Each February 14th, we have a spirit day where everyone wearspink and red for Valentine's Day. Also, you can buy singing Valentine grams from the Choir, where they go around and sing love songs during classes to the person you choose! Its a cute experience to see and another fun way to celebrate Valentine's Day!

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? Let me know in the comments!

Sports Authority

Hey everyone! As a follow up to my last post, I am pleased to report that the New York Giants are the winners of the Super Bowl! Although it was a close game, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots with a final score of 21-17. Talk about a nail biter! The Giants have played in the Super Bowl five times, and have won four times including this year. Although there can only be one winner, both teams should be extremely proud for making it to the final round.

Speaking of sports, since the seasons are changing here, so are the high school sports! The sports year is divided up into three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. There are different sports that only occur during these seasons. For example, American football and tennis are fall sports, basketball and soccer (football) are winter sports, and baseball and track and field are spring sports. Since I am not involved in a winter sport, I am in pre-season for my spring sport, Track and field! Track and field is a sport comprised of different athletic activities based on running, jumping, and throwing.
In the running category, there are long distance, sprinters, and relays. In the jumping category, there is long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. In the throwing competition, there is shot put and discus. There truly is an activity good for each unique person. Since I am so tall, jumps are a good fit for me. I am on the varsity long jump and triple jump team, and can't wait to start another competitive season.

What event would you do if you were in track? Running, jumping, or throwing? Let me know in the comments!

Super Football

New England Patriots
New York Giants
Hey everyone! This Sunday is the Super Bowl for American football! Every fall football season, football teams from all over the country face off until the two best teams are decided. Then, those two teams go head to head in the Super Bowl! This year the two teams in the Super Bowl are the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Since these two teams are fighting for the best title out there, fans get really into it. Every Super Bowl, there are parties, games, and friendly rivalries. It's always fun to guess who will win and what score they will get, and see who gets it right!
Me and my friend from last
year's Super Bowl
Go Saints!
Since it is such a big game, it is almost impossible to get tickets. It is watched on TV's everywhere. Over 110 million people tune in to the game, making it the most watched event in history! Since so many people watch it, advisors pay big bucks to get their 30 seconds of fame on a commercial. The average cost for a 30 second commercial is between $2.5 million and $2.8 million! The best commercials of the year always appear on the Super Bowl since it is such a heavily watched event. Its one of the only times you don't mind watching commercials on TV!

Although every sporting event has a big finale, this is the most watched, supported, and anticipated one. I can't wait to share with you the winner!

What is your favorite sport and sport's team? Let me know in the comments below!
