Super Signers

Way to go hawk athletes!
Hey everyone! At high schools all across the United States, top sports athletes were committing to their colleges through National Signing Day. This happens on the first Wednesday of February each year and it is the first day a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for their college. In other words, this is the day where all athletes who have been recruited by a college to play a sport there commit to the college.
At my school, we had 7 athletes sign with colleges. They are going to be attending colleges all over the country ranging from Dartmouth and Boston University in the East Coast to Cal Baptist and UC Santa Barbara in California. It is exciting for me to see my fellow classmates committing to the colleges they will be at next year. Since I am not playing a sport for a college team, I will not hear back from my colleges until the end of March or the beginning of April. So while I am waiting, these athletes can relax because, as of today, they are officially accepted to their amazing colleges.

How do you feel about a signing day for American sports teams? Let me know in the comments!

A Day for Moms

Hey everyone! Today in the United States we celebrated Mother's Day! Mother's Day celebrates mothers and all they do for those around them. It is celebrated all over the world occurring most commonly in March, April, or May. In the United States, we celebrate Mother's Day the second Sunday of May each year. However not every country celebrates the holiday then. Norway celebrates Mother's Day the second Sunday of February. Having Mother's Day on a Sunday is great because there is no school and you have the most time to spend with your mother. People celebrate Mother's Day in different ways from family brunches to a day outing. Even if it is just spending time at home, Mother's Day is a great time to show your mother how much you care. So next time your Mother does something nice for you remember to thank her because she is doing it out of love.

How do you celebrate Mother's Day? Let me know in the comments!

St. Paddy's Day

Hey Everyone! Each year, people around the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17th. The day celebrates Saint Patrick of Ireland and Irish culture. It started as a feast day to celebrate the Saint but has evolved into celebrating Irish culture and customs world wide. St. Patrick's Day is a public holiday in Ireland, but in other places like the United States is celebrated through parties and wearing green. Why must everyone wear green on St. Patrick's Day? Well originally the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Yet as his recognition grew, he became linked with the shamrock, a green four leaf clover. Now, people wear green to honor him and his shamrock.
Currently in the United States, this event is not a public holiday anywhere. However, it is still greatly celebrated through parades, parties, and religious observances. It is used to celebrate Irish American culture, though everyone celebrates even if they are not Irish. St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated in the United States since the late eighteenth century, even before the American Revolution.

When St. Patrick's Day falls on a school day, everyone comes to school wearing green! However, this year it was on a Saturday. This didn't stop anyone from wearing green though! It's always a tradition no matter what day it falls on.
